Here is an explanation of what are hemroids, who gets them, and how to get rid of hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids commonly known as piles are enlarged and swollen blood vessels in or around the anus and lower rectum (back passage).
Solid waste material (stools or faeces) is stored in the rectum before being passed out of the body through the anus.
Hemorrhoids piles occur due to increased pressure in the
blood vessels in your rectum (the storage area that holds
the stools) and anus - the opening at the end of the
digestive system where solid waste leaves the body.
This is often because of straining when trying to pass a stool. The blood vessels in and around your anus become inflamed (red and swollen).
Others factors that can increase your chances of having haemorrhoids include:
- Being constipated (unable to empty your bowels) regularly, often due to a lack of fibre in your diet.
- Being overweight.
- Being over 50 years of age (ageing can make the support structures in your body tissues weaker, making
haemorrhoids more likely).
- Having a family history of haemorrhoids, for example you may have inherited something from your parents that
makes haemorrhoids more likely, such as having weak blood vessels.
- Pregnancy, where you experience increased abdominal pressure on your pelvic blood vessel, causing your
blood vessels to enlarge (the haemorrhoids often disappear after giving birth) .
- Prolonged diarrhoea.
- Regularly lifting heavy objects.
Haemorrhoids can cause no symptoms, especially if they're small, and many people don't realise they have them. However, they can also cause a range of problems, including...
- Bleeding when passing stools (blood in the poo poo).
Bleeding from the back passage. The mucosa or membrane that covers the haemorrhoids is quite delicate and if it's damaged
there may be bleeding. This is usually seen as small amounts of bright red blood on the toilet paper or surface of the motions.
Occasionally, they cause severe bleeding.
- An itchy feeling around the anus or back passage.
- A swelling protruding from the anus. Haemorrhoids may be felt as small soft lumps at the opening of the back passage,
sometimes compared to a bunch of grapes. They're usually soft and fleshy but may become hard if thrombosis occurs (when
a clot forms in the blood vessel, blocking it). They may only appear after straining on the toilet.
- Mucus discharge.
The exact reasoin why the blood vessels can become swollen and lead to external hemorrhoids or internal hemorrhoids forming is not clear.
Some hemorrhoids seem to develop for no apparent reason. However, it is thought that the pressure in and around the lower anus can be a major factor in many cases. Some people describe them as varicose veins of the anus.
If the pressure in and around the lower anus is increased, then it is thought that this can lead to what causes Piles/hemorrhoids.
The tissue of the anus is rich in blood vessels. If these blood vessels become dilated and swollen, they may project into the anal canal or out of the back passage - a prolapse to form visible swellings.
Hemorrhoids bleeding tend to be caused by factors that cause the blood vessels to swell. These include anything that increases pressure inside the abdomen, such as being overweight, constipation and pregnancy.
Haemorrhoids piles are usually mild and, in most cases, the symptoms will go away naturally within a few days. Most people may not even realise they have haemorrhoids as they do not experience any symptoms.
The symptoms of piles haemorrhoids include:
- Bleeding after you have passed a stool (this will be bright red blood)
- Discomfort around your anus, such as feeling sore or it being visibly red
- Discharge of mucus present after passing a stool
- Excessive straining when passing a stool
- Feeling like your bowels are still full and need emptying
- Itchiness around your anus (the opening at the end of the digestive system where solid waste leaves the body)
- Pain while passing a stool
Contact your General Practitioner (GP) if you experience pain or discomfort as a result of haemorrhoids.
It is also best to contact your GP if you have blood or mucus in your stools, as this can be a sign of another health condition.
Haemorrhoids can be:
- Internal piles/hemorrhoids
- External piles/hemorrhoids
Internal piles haemorrhoids are classified using a grading system from one to four.
Grade 1 piles/haemorrhoids are small swellings often inside the lining of your anus. They cannot be seen and are very common. In some cases, they will enlarge to grade two.
Grade 2 piles/haemorrhoids are larger in size but are still within your anus. Sometimes they become pushed out when you pass a stool, but will return inside immediately after.
Grade 3 piles/haemorrhoids appear outside your anus. You may be able to feel one or more small lumps hanging out. They are also referred to as prolapsed haemorrhoids. You will usually be able to push them back inside using your finger.
Grade 4 piles/haemorrhoids can become quite large and remain outside your anus permanently. They cannot be pushed back inside and will need to be treated by your GP.
Internal piles/haemorrhoids develop 2-4cm above the opening of the anus.
External piles/haemorrhoids, also known as perianal haematoma, are small lumps that develop on the outside edge of the anus.
They can become increasingly itchy.
If a blood clot forms inside them (thrombosed external haemorrhoid), it can cause a lot of pain, requiring immediate treatment.
This type of haemorrhoid is less common. External piles/haemorrhoids that are only causing mild to moderate pain usually get better without treatment within 7 to 10 days. If necessary, you can use the treatments described on the hemorrhoid miracle cure ebook.
If you have an external piles/haemorrhoid that is causing severe pain, a blood clot may have formed inside it. This is known as a thrombosed external piles haemorrhoid.
If a thrombosed external pile/haemorrhoid is diagnosed within 72 hours of the pain starting, you may be urgently referred to a surgeon to have it removed under local anaesthetic - pain killing medication.
Estimates for how common piles/haemorrhoids are vary, as often any symptoms to do with the anus, such as bleeding, are thought to be haemorrhoids, when it could be another condition.
In the most countrry, it is estimated that between 4% and 25% of the population is affected by haemorrhoids.
Anyone at any age can be affected by haemorrhoids. However, they are usually more common during pregnancy and in people between 45 and 65 years of age.
To make a piles/hemorrhoids diagnosis, your doctor or GP will ask you several questions and perform a physical examination.
They will examine your anus - the opening at the end of the digestive system where solid waste leaves the body to check for swollen blood vessels.
It is important you tell your doctor or GP:
- If your stools contain any blood.
- If there is any mucus present in your stools
- If you have recently lost a lot of weight
- If your bowel movements have changed
- What colour your stools are
Hemorrhoids piles usually settle down in a few days without any treatment. However, there are a number of piles treatments that will reduce the itching and discomfort that haemorrhoids can cause.
Lifestyle changes are usually the first step of hemorrhoids treatment.
The treatment of haemorrhoids depends on the severity of symptoms. Firstly, it's important to take steps to avoid aggravating factors such as constipation or being overweight.
Keeping your bowel motions soft and regular will also help to avoid straining.
- Make sure you eat plenty of fibre to provide bulk in your diet by including lots of bread, vegetables,
cereal and nuts.
- Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of water and fruit juice.
- Avoid causes of constipation, such as painkillers containing codeine
- Consider fibre supplements.
- Keep to a regular bowel habit and go to the toilet when you feel the need to - don't try to hold it in.
- Get plenty of exercise - this helps keeps the bowels regular.
- Hemorrhoids are common in pregnancy and usually resolve after delivery.
- Conservative management is usually adequate.
- Oral rutosides have shown promise in reducing symptoms from first and second stage hemorrhoids in late pregnancy, but further information is needed on their safety.
- Consider referral to secondary care if there are severe symptoms or complications.
- Increasing fibre and fluid intake is the most important aspect of conservative management.
- It may take 6 weeks before improvement is apparent.
- The aim is to:
- Soften the stools.
- Reduce the need for straining.
- This can be achieved by:
- A high fibre diet - rich in fruit and vegetables, whole grain cereals and adequate fluid intake (2L or 8
glasses per day of non-caffeinated fluids).
- Fibre supplements or bulk providing laxatives (E.g. methylcellulose, sterculia, ispaghula husk) accompanied by
adequate fluid intake.
- A systematic review found that fibre based laxatives had a consistent beneficial effect on symptom relief and bleeding.
- A high fibre diet - rich in fruit and vegetables, whole grain cereals and adequate fluid intake (2L or 8 glasses per day of non-caffeinated fluids).
Constipation is when someone goes to the toilet less often than usual, or when it's difficult to pass a stool. It's a change from a person's usual pattern of bowel opening.
The constipation risks dangers is that if you do choose to try a high-protein diet, make sure you have plenty of laxatives on hand.
High-protein diets cause constipation because they are composed mainly of foods (Meat, Fish and Cheese) that are completely free of dietary fiber, which is necessary for proper bowel function.
Low-fiber diets are also believed to cause varicose veins, hemorrhoids and hiatal hernia.
Fiber, found only in plant foods (food high in carbohydrates), has many health-promoting qualities.
It binds with carcinogens, fats, and cholesterol and eliminates them in the feces.
By eliminating carcinogens, it reduces your risk of developing cancer, and by eliminating fat and cholesterol, it reduces your risk of heart disease, atherosclerosis, and obesity.
Fiber also improves the efficiency of insulin, so that we need less of it to maintain appropriate bloodsugar levels.
Pain relieving haemorrhoid/pile creams and ointments, which may contain an anaesthetic, can help soothe the discomfort of hemorrhoids and allow you to open your bowels more easily.
Cold packs and strong pain relief may be needed if haemorrhoids become thrombosed.
Hemorrhoids surgery may be necessary to treat persistent or painful haemorrhoids. Many different techniques are used, including injecting the haemorrhoids with a chemical to make them scar;
And shrink, putting a tight band around them until they drop off (ligation) or freezing or cutting them.

"Now I have no pain. Wow!
I have had internal bleeding hemmorrhoids from pregnancy and the over the counter stuff has just made it so much more worse (prep H and stool softeners - what the Doc recommended).
[This system] stopped the bleeding and .... now I have no pain. Wow!
"My Hemorrhoid is GONE
Again, thanks for your wonderful advice...I also much appreciate your news letters and agree with so much of what you say, especially with regard to what doctors know and how pharmaceutical companies work.
I'm sure you'll agree...it is obscene how they value the almighty dollar over the more noble cause that they originally (I hope) went into the profession for.
To now, after suffering with a persistent cough for nearly 30 years and 2 operations, find that a simple, inexpensive system ... alleviate my cough in only 2 doses, is astounding !
My hemorrhoid is GONE, cough nearly extinct, mild case of psoriasis on the run, all because of [this system] ... Who'da thunk it?
I have introduced many of my family and friends to your system .... one of em actually takes it mixed with his Metamucil each morning!......excuse my French, but it gives new meaning to the phrase "*** sh*t"! LOL
Well thank you again for your research and dedication to solving a problem logically and naturally! If your ever giving a talk in NYC, please let me know, I love to attend.
